I may not have any great attachment to Hong Kong (despite having a love for stinky tofu and some pretty amazing rice rolls in Sham Shui Po), but I still have family and friends who live there. The protests occurring there against an extradition bill is simultaneously heartening and disheartening as the likelihood of success seems to be slim. I have already joked to my mother that if China will consider me a citizen due to the fact that my parents both still have Hong Kong citizenship, I probably would not risk setting foot in that country again. As such, I certainly understand and sympathize with the anxiety and distrust around this new legislation.
I always wonder how my parents feel about this, having grown up in Hong Kong and leaving just as soon as they were able to. My mom and I may moan about the crowds while my dad and I moan about the heat, but I'm sure they still have some level of attachment to the city itself.
As always, I am grateful for the efforts they have taken to giving me a safe and happy upbringing.
